HOW TO PLAN YOUR WEDDING ABROAD ON A BUDGET

Your wedding day will be one of the most special days of your life – but it could easily become one of the most expensive! One way to bring the cost of your nuptials down can be to opt for an overseas wedding. If you’re thinking of turning your big day into an even bigger adventure, we’ve got some tips on how to plan your wedding abroad on a budget!

Package or go it alone?

Many couples book a package with a holiday company for their wedding abroad. The advantage of this is that you’ll pay one lump sum for flights, accommodation, wedding ceremony and reception. There will often be a wedding planner available as well. This can sometimes work out cheaper than sourcing everything yourself.

Check the small print!

If opting for a package deal, make sure to read the small print before signing on the dotted line! Make sure you know exactly what’s included and what isn’t. If you’re only getting a very basic package, would it be cheaper in the long run to book everything separately?

Off the beaten track?

Often, getting hitched in a touristic or fashionable destination can come with a hefty price tag. Take a look for less conventional locations which might be cheaper options. Do remember, however, that your guests are all going to have to be able to get there, and might not want to have to travel hours from the airport!

Let’s talk numbers

Speaking of guests, one way that planning your wedding abroad can help you save money is that you’re more likely to have fewer guests! This will mean you can choose a smaller venue and won’t have so many mouths to feed. Don’t send out lots of invitations on the assumption that most people won’t come, though, as this could lead to an expensive surprise!

Go local

When it comes to food and drink, often the best deals will be found on produce local to the region. It’s important to remember the tastes of your guests; if they’re defiantly ‘meat and two veg’ people, you might want to go for some of the safer, more traditional options!

All in the planning

Hiring a wedding planner*, while an extra cost, can make organising your wedding abroad simpler. They’ll be able to better deal with local suppliers, use their own contacts and be your on-the-spot point of contact. As they are usually local, they might also be able to grab you some bargains for your big day which can bring the cost down overall!

Money matters

Getting married overseas will inevitably mean sending large sums of money abroad, and high street banks will charge fees for doing this. You can find specialist money-transfer services online who will charge less or no fee at all. Paying by credit and debit card abroad can also be costly, so options such as prepaid currency cards can be a good alternative.
