Insuring Your Touring Caravan While Out of Use

Insuring Touring Caravan While Out Of Use

We’re well into the winter months now. Chances are, you won’t be taking your caravan out in the colder season! Even though you might not be using your caravan, it could still be a good idea to think about taking out insurance for your caravan. Here are a few ways insurance could cover you and your caravan while it’s out of use.

Does home insurance cover caravans?

Most home insurance won’t cover your caravan as standard, even if you do keep it at your home. Home insurance could cover contents inside your caravan but might not cover the caravan itself from things like fire, flooding or theft.

Additional caravan cover might be able to be added to your home insurance as an add on, but this can often be more expensive than specialist caravan insurance!

Cover for theft or vandalism

While your caravan is out of use, it could still be prone to theft or vandalism! Caravan theft can occur in any location, at any time of year. It can literally be daylight robbery! Vandalism is also a worry, and your caravan could be at risk of damage even while out of use. This can be a particular issue if you keep your caravan at home, as it’s an obvious target for vandalism, break-ins or theft.

Weather and fire-related damage

At The Insurance Emporium, we offer additional discounts if your caravan is stored at a site registered with CaSSOA (Caravan Storage Site Owners’ Association). While storing your caravan at a CaSSOA-registered site can be more secure, it won’t necessarily protect your ‘van from weather-related damage from floods and storms!

Floods can cause severe interior and exterior damage to your caravan, while storms could make debris fall from trees, which could cause serious damage! Frost can be a particular issue over winter, and there is also the risk of fire damage, should the worst happen!

Damage while manoeuvring your caravan

Just because you’re not out and about in your caravan doesn’t mean you won’t have to move it every now and then! There might be times when you need to move your caravan off the drive. You might also want to drive your caravan for any repairs or servicing it might need. No matter how short the journey might be, your caravan could still be at risk of accidental damage!
