It might be over for another year, but there are many people still buzzing about Crufts 2019! At The Insurance Emporium, we were lucky enough to be able to head off on an adventure of our own to visit the renowned dog show. There was loads to see and do, with plenty of dogs to hang out with – but here’s a selection of our highlights from the four-day event!

Crufts 2019

The show in numbers

Upon entering the venue, Birmingham’s NEC, the excitement created by the show was evident! This was helped by its size, and the sheer number of dogs around; a total of around 27,000 pups attended this year’s Crufts! Of these pooches, 3,611 were visiting from overseas, and there were more than 200 different breeds!

Float like a butterfly!

The most coveted award during the four days is that of Best in Show. This year’s winner was a Papillon named Dylan, who’d come all the way from Belgium with his owner Kathleen Roosens! The breed’s name means butterfly in French, and refers to the beautiful feathering on their ears. 2019 is the first time that a Papillon has won best in show, Cocker Spaniels are the most successful with seven awards.

Crufts 2019

Friends for life

One award that really caught our attention was the Friends for Life prize, which aims to highlight the transformative bond between dogs and their owners. This year’s award went to Finn, a police dog who almost died after being stabbed whilst protecting his handler, PC Dave Wardell. The assault on Finn resulted in the creation of a bill, now in its final stages in the House of Lords, to make such attacks a criminal offence.

Tealy good!

Crufts 2019

Our favourite part of our visit was meeting a dog we sponsor, Teal, and his owner Hayley Telling, who also happened to be competing in four agility and jump events! We got to enjoy a demonstration of Teal’s abilities before joining the audience to watch them in action. Throughout the four days, they enjoyed much success – including winning the Agility Championship on Sunday!

We had a fantastic time hob-nobbing with the amazing pooches at Crufts, and can’t wait for next year’s event!
