Stick ‘em up!

First off, make sure that your vehicle has a ‘GB’ sticker on it somewhere. On newer vehicles, these are often a part of the number plate but if yours isn’t you’ll need a sticker on both your car and caravan.

Pedal off the metal!

It’s a good idea to pay very close attention to the speed limits in each country! Particularly so in France and Belgium, where they are particularly strict and known to issue large on-the-spot fines. In Belgium, you could be charged up to €2,750 for going 40km/h over the limit!

Documentation in a foreign nation

It goes without saying that you’ll need to take your driving licence and passport with you! It could also be worthwhile taking along your insurance certificate, this could come in very handy if you’re involved in an incident and are having trouble with the local language.

Make sure you’re covered!

You’ll need at least third-party cover when you’re in Europe, so do your research and make sure that you have an insurance policy that will cover you. It could be important to check how many days you’re covered for on the continent, as this can vary between insurers and policies.

Caught in the headlights!

As you’ll be driving on the right-hand side of the road, you’ll need some headlight converters in order to drive legally. The idea of these is to stop you from dazzling other drivers. British headlights are made to shine to the left slightly (away from the other side of the road) and this means that they need to be switched when you’re in Europe!

Making a statement!

The Constat Amiable, or European Accident Statement, form is widely used across Europe, so it could be useful to take a copy with you. In the event of an accident this enables you to fill in the details roadside and swap them with the other party. Remember that it can be legally binding, so if you don’t agree with what has been written on there, don’t sign it!

Get fully equipped!

Many caravan owners might take along some important equipment, such as a warning triangle, when they are out on the road. It could be important to remember that each country has its own rules and regulations regarding what equipment you need. Do your research and stock up your ‘van!

Time to reflect…

A lot of European countries require drivers to carry a reflective jacket in their car at all times. This is to be used if you get out of the car at any point during an accident or a breakdown…

Heading on an adventure abroad in your caravan can be an exciting time and, if you’re properly prepared, shouldn’t be anything to worry about. Doing your research and making sure that you have everything you need could make a huge difference if something unfortunate happens on your travels. Making sure that you have some Caravan Insurance could also be very important.
