Sometimes, when we’re busy with all of life’s adventures, it’s easy for our minds to wander leading us to do something we’d rather forget! If you find yourself thinking “I hope nobody saw that…” at least once a day, you’re not alone. But rather than sweating the small stuff, at The Insurance Emporium, we’d rather have a good laugh at ourselves. That’s why we’ve put together our list of ridiculous things we can all relate to!
Pushing a Pull Door
…Or vice versa! There’s a special sort of embarrassment to be felt whenever you’re stopped in your tracks by misunderstanding the basic function of a door. You may be left looking like a deer in the headlights, wondering whether the door has betrayed you, or whether you were at fault. According to Dan Norman, author of The Design of Everyday Things, it is, in fact, the door’s fault you got it wrong! Which quite frankly, is a good enough excuse for us.
Have you ever walked into a room, only to be completely perplexed as to why you found yourself there? There might be a reason for this phenomenon, explained by our good friend, science! Essentially, our brain functions a bit like a really complex computer, which treats doorways as “event boundaries”. When passing through one of these event boundaries, the brain automatically files away what happened previously, ready to take in new information. That’s why you might find yourself forgetting why you walked into a room in the first place! The solution? Fewer doorways, probably.
Let me set the scene; it’s the middle of the night. You’re in bed, maybe reading a book, playing a video game or mindlessly scrolling through social media before you fall asleep. As you drift off, your grip gradually releases. Suddenly, you’re jolted awake by a slap in the face from your phone, book, or whatever else you were holding. We can’t blame this one on faulty design or even science, unfortunately. This is one of those times you should probably just put your phone down.
Waking Yourself Up With a Snore
On the subject of sleeping; this one’s odd if you find yourself doing it, hilarious if you catch somebody else! The look of confusion and sheer bewilderment on a friend’s face when they snore loud enough to wake themselves up is worth putting up with the odd noises they make in their sleep. Bear in mind, if you’re the one waking yourself up snoring, you’re probably keeping someone else up too!
Don’t try and get out of this one. Whether you’re stuck in traffic or out on the open road, the volume goes up and the private karaoke party begins. Here’s the secret though (and skip to the next point if you don’t want your life turning upside down). Those of us who think we’re invisible in our cars? We’re not. As much as you’d like to believe otherwise, your car will not shield you from the view of strangers and isn’t soundproof. You’ll be seen in rear-views, through car windows, by passers-by. And you’ll look fabulous! Just remember to always be aware of your surroundings while you’re driving, otherwise you could face a £5,000 fine!
Sometimes the most difficult decisions in life are the ones that seem the simplest. What should I have for tea? What outfit should I wear? What brand of washing up liquid should I buy? If you can relate, you might have Fobo – or “fear of better options”. These seemingly small choices are nothing less than devastating for some people, trickling down to affect every aspect of your life. The problem is, Fobo doesn’t only affect minor decisions, but can have an impact on major decisions too, like deciding whether to take a job offer! In the worst case scenario, you’ll be so indecisive that you don’t make any decisions at all. On the other hand, in the best case, you’ll take more time and make more informed decisions, so it might not be such a bad thing after all!
