Scoring a hole-in-one in a round of golf has to be one of the greatest achievements in any sport. Hitting the ball directly from the tee into the hole almost seems like an impossible feat and certainly isn’t something that happens often! However, it is possible and it does happen… more often than you might think! Professional golfers Robert Allenby and Hal Sutton hold the record for the most career holes-in-one, each managing ten in their careers. At The Insurance Emporium, we think a hole-in-one should be enjoyed, that’s why our Golf Insurance policies include a Hole-In-One Benefit! Check out our guide to the ultimate golfing achievement.

What is a hole-in-one?

Quite simply, a hole-in-one is where the ball is hit from the tee, straight into the hole and remains there. This means that it can’t bounce back out and must lie in the cup. The shot must also be your first from the tee on that hole, so if you’ve already hit a shot into the water, or can’t find your ball, it wouldn’t count as a true hole-in-one. In recent history, Justin Rose’s hole-in-one during the 2016 Olympics is particularly memorable, especially as it was an Olympic first!

How does it work?

Although The Rules of Golf don’t directly address a hole-in-one, there is generally accepted guidance on the scenarios where a hole-in-one would officially count. Firstly, you can’t be alone on the course and must be playing with a partner who is keeping score. It is also vitally important that the hole-in-one occurs during a ‘formal round of golf’, this means that, should you hit one during a practice hole, it won’t count as an official achievement.

What does it mean?

After the initial excitement and knee slide across the turf (we don’t actually advise that!), you’re expected to get the drinks in back at the clubhouse. This is where things can get controversial, the policy is generally that you should buy everyone in the clubhouse a drink or simply put some money behind the bar, something that could end up being rather costly, however it is accepted by others that it’s okay to just buy your playing partners. Just be careful, you might get a few dirty looks if you choose the latter option!
