Beating the Winter Blues

Many people are happy to embrace the approach of winter, digging out their coats, hats and scarves to enjoy whatever adventures the season has to offer. There are others, however, who find getting through winter arduous; with its cold weather and dark nights. If you fall into the second category, there are things that you can do to help make the season more bearable, and we’re sharing seven of the best ways to beat the winter blues!

Beating the Winter Blues - embrace it!

1. Vitamin D

Vitamin D is essential to help your body regulate mood, maintain blood sugar levels and your immune system. The problem is that the main source of it is sunlight, often in short supply over winter! Taking vitamin D supplements during the darker months can help lift your spirits until the coming of spring.

2. Get moving!

While it can be tempting to curl up inside when it’s cold and wet, staying active can be a great way to enhance your dopamine levels and give your brain a kick start! Even going for a short walk each day can help to boost your mood considerably, especially if it gets you out and about during daylight hours.

3. You are what you eat

This old saying is definitely true in winter! If you spend your days eating greasy, processed foods you might feel good about it in the moment, but the energy they provide won’t last and you could start feeling sluggish. Fresh food and plenty of veg will keep you feeling full for longer and give you the energy you’ll need for the frostbitten months ahead.

4. Sunshine and smiles

Some people really struggle when there’s a lack of sunlight. If this sounds like you, why not give light therapy a go? Sitting next to a lightbox for half an hour each day, especially one that uses blue light, might help you to get your day off to a good start and bring a smile to your face!

5. Stay in touch

It can be so much easier to be out doing things and socialising when the sun is shining! During winter remember to keep in touch with friends and family, and arrange to see them regularly. The benefits of getting out to events or other people’s houses greatly outweigh those of staying cooped up and away from the world!

6. Embrace the winter!

If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. Or so they say. Winter is a fact of life which isn’t going away anytime soon, so why not make a promise to yourself to enjoy it? Use the colder months as an excuse to indulge in a hot chocolate, get into a great book and feel snug in a massive cuddly jumper. Look at it as a period for a bit of R&R!

7. Summer holidays?

If you’ve worked your way down this list and are still struggling with the winter blues, how about thinking ahead to the summer to come? Planning activities such as summer holidays might give you something to look forward to. It could help to make winter seem just that bit shorter, or at least slightly more bearable.

However you spend your winter, we hope we’ve given you some ideas to make it a little brighter! If you find yourself feeling down during the colder season and just can’t seem to shake off the blues no matter what tips you’ve tried, having a chat with your GP might prove helpful.
