Sunday 29th October 2017 is a date that many people will be dreading even if they’re not fully aware of it. Autumn will be in full swing by that point. The trees will be bare, the leaves on the ground and it won’t be long until the whiff of fireworks is in the nostrils and the whooping of ghouls and ghosts will echo around suburban streets. But Sunday the 29th is when the clocks go back and it’s impossible not to notice the difference. The days become steadily shorter and it isn’t uncommon to find yourself travelling to and from work in darkness. Of course, autumn and winter isn’t all doom and gloom, but the change in daylight can affect us in a number of ways. One of those ways is how we enjoy our passions and continue to enjoy life’s adventures; which is why we are launching our Be Smart, Be Bright campaign…
The climate in the UK is usually quite mild and the gradual change in conditions means that it can be easy to forget about avoiding potential hazards while pursuing your passions. Maybe you’re hacking with your horse on country roads in the early evening or aiming to beat the weekend traffic with an early morning bike ride. Perhaps you’re walking the Weimaraner after work or you’re a student rushing to make that late lecture. Or it could be that you’re simply embarking on your daily commute in your trusty car. Whatever it is, the chances are it might be darker and the weather conditions could be decidedly adverse.
Our Be Smart, Be Bright campaign is designed to raise awareness of this. If you are out on the road on your horse or bike, you should wear reflective, luminous clothing and plan your route accordingly to avoid potentially dangerous traffic. The same applies if you are out with your pet but bear in mind that you are also responsible for them. Students should be aware while out at night in dark town centres; the risk of mugging or road traffic incidents can be minimalised by putting your phone away and paying attention. While driving make sure that your headlights are in good working condition and most importantly that they’re switched on!
