1. The Old Course, St Andrews

St Andrews, Scotland, is affectionately known as “The Home of Golf” – and for good reason! The town houses the oldest, most iconic golf course in the world, the Old Course. Steeped in history and tradition, the Old Course introduced the 18-hole standard, and has some incredible features. Seven of the large, double greens are each shared by two holes, for a unique golfing experience. It’s also home to one of the most famous attractions in golf, the 700-year-old Swilcan Bridge, which can be walked over when approaching the 18th green.

2. Hunting Course, Slaley Hall, Northumberland

Streams, lakes and huge, towering trees are par for the course at the picturesque Hunting Course at Slaley Hall in Northumberland. But don’t let the views fool you. This course is as challenging as it is beautiful. Pine trees line the edge of the fairways, a remnant of the original pine forest the course was carved from. The challenge ramps up over the last four holes too, with plenty of hazards on the fairway. The 18th is a beautiful downhill tee shot, with the green surrounded by bunkers. Not a course for the faint of heart.

3. Royal North, Devon

First founded in 1864, Royal North is England’s oldest golf course, boasting over 250 years of history. The course changes in character throughout its 18 holes, first taking you towards stunning views of the coast. You’ll then make your way over the huge, timber-fronted Cape bunker. It’s a challenging course with a huge amount of history and tradition, and some amazing views of the Devon coastline and surrounding countryside.

4. Royal Birkdale, Merseyside

Known as one of the top 5 golf clubs in the UK, and up there with some of the greatest in the world, Royal Birkdale is an incredible course. There’s a reason the course has hosted countless tournaments, including the Open Championship nine times, and the Ryder Cup twice! Set amongst the largest sand dunes in the UK, the area is home to a large amount of extraordinary wildlife, including the rare red squirrel, and the elusive sand lizard. If you’re a nature lover and a golf lover, this is the course for you.

5. Old Head, Ireland

Okay, this one’s not technically in the UK – but it was too stunning not to include! Jutting out over two miles into the Atlantic Ocean, Old Head may be the most unique round of golf you ever experience. Throughout the 18 holes, you’ll tour the 200-acre island-like diamond of land. As you play, the unmistakable sound of waves crashing 300 feet below frame this extraordinary experience. There’s even a whole network of caves running beneath your feet as you play. The whole experience is truly stunning, and is a must-play course for any true golf lovers.
