Your Story – Colin & Saffy, Dog Insurance

This time around, we’ve caught up with our customer Colin, to hear more about his dog, Saffy, and what led to him having to make a claim.

Background:

My wife and I have had dogs nearly all the time since we’ve been married. We‘ve had two Chihuahuas over the years as well as a miniature Greyhound, which we got from a Liverpool dogs rescue home after she’d been abandoned. We had her for 18 years from the age of two and she went everywhere with us because she was so small and very friendly.

Saffy came from a Chihuahua rescue; she was from a puppy farm and had evidently reached the end of her useful life on the puppy farm at the age of seven. We got her when she was eight. She was very quiet and could not relate to dog toys or fetch a ball or generally play like normal dogs. In our opinion we think her childhood was responsible for how she was and sadly, by the looks of her condition when we got her, she had to fight hard at the puppy farm.

What’s your dog’s personality like and what are her favourite things to do?

It took quite some time to get her to mix with other people and dogs as she was very withdrawn, however, now she is the total boss of the house, and us.

Choosing pet insurance:

We hadn’t had pet insurance before; my wife’s father was friends with a vet from Liverpool veterinary college and he very kindly would look after her father’s dogs and ours if they ever needed it.

However, when we got Saffy things had changed so we needed insurance for her.

We had to make a claim after Saffy was booked into the vets for the day to remove a small fatty lump on her back. However, following the discovery of fluid on her lungs, which was linked to her heart, the operation was cancelled.

She is on medication every day, probably for the rest of her life too.

How did you find the claims process?

When speaking to staff, how did you find this experience?

With regards to dealing with Saffy’s insurance we can’t fault the service we received. At the start of finding she was having health problems, I rang and spoke to customer service to log what we had been told by the vet in case it affected our premium and the person I spoke to was very helpful.
