This time around, we’ve caught up with our customer Gary, to hear more about his dog, Finn, and what led to him having to make a claim.
Background:
I’m 65 and my wife is 60 and we’ve always had pets since we’ve been married. We’ve always had a dog and as kids, we both had dogs.
Currently, I have four pets, two dogs and two cats. We have three-year-old Finn who is a Cockapoo, Freya who is a six-year-old Tibetan Terrier and we have a 12-year-old ginger moggy, and a one-year-old Burmese Blue kitten. They’ve all been with us since they were puppies and kittens.
The Tibetan Terrier is a very unusual breed, there’s only 1,000 a year registered at the Kennel Club but to be honest that’s one thing that attracted us to them because they’re not a very popular dog. When we got Finn, it was a more spontaneous thing because his colourings are a grey merle.
Before that we’ve had Schnauzers, Shih Tzus, and Blue Roan Cocker Spaniels – lots of dogs over the 40 years that we have been married.
We always used to rescue them, but these last few times we decided we would get them as puppies from a dog breeder because we have always inherited lots of health issues or behavioural issues.
What’s your dog’s personality like and what are his favourite things to do?
Cockapoos have a great nature, we were pretty sure all the pets would get on. Although, the cats dominate the dogs; they get on great with each other, there isn’t a problem. They have the odd incident where one wants a bit of someone else’s food, and the dogs get told off, verbally, by the cats but other than that it’s not a problem .
Choosing pet insurance:
We’ve always had insurance for all of our pets, however, our experience with rescued dogs has meant you need to consider how existing conditions and illnesses might affect the level of cover you have for that pet, which is understandable.
How did you come to choose The Insurance Emporium?
We had all our animals insured with another provider. However, having made a claim for one pet, the renewal* was out of our budget. We choose The Insurance Emporium as it suited our budget.
Gary’s experience with The Insurance Emporium:
Finn managed to get a couple of grass seeds into his ear, earlier in the year. He was playing with another dog and rolling around in long grass and it became quite obvious that it was there. He started crying and trying to shake it out and when he was walking his head was leaning to one side, so it was extremely uncomfortable as soon as he did it.
We had to take him to the vet as we couldn’t get it out ourselves. The vet tried to get it out then and there, but he just wouldn’t tolerate it because they were so deep. They decided to sedate him and then they came out no problem. Finn had to stay in their hospital for a little while and then we picked him up and he’s been alright ever since.
How did you find the claims process?
We’re quite surprised that everything went according to plan and the stuff The Insurance Emporium didn’t pay for* I knew about before because it’s in the policy wording so there were no surprises whatsoever and speed-wise it was fine. We had the money in our account within 10 days, something like that, after the vet sent in the claim form.
When speaking to staff, how did you find this experience?
Really good. We just rang up and said what had happened and asked for a claim form. We filled out our part and then took it to the vet for them to do the rest.
You never know how good an insurance policy is until you have to make a claim, that’s the proof of the pudding isn’t it? But, with The Insurance Emporium, everything went really well.
