5 UK CYCLING CHALLENGES YOU NEED ON YOUR BUCKET LIST!

For keen cyclists, the next magical adventure is never far away! Sometimes, though, you might want to crank your adventure up to the max! At The Insurance Emporium, we think it’s important for everyone to get the most from their passions. Which is why we’ve made this list of 5 UK cycling challenges that’ll really get those legs burning!

1. Bealach Mor, Scotland

Taking place on the Applecross peninsula on Scotland’s west coast, Bealach Mor has become a key cycling destination. It features some of the most stunning views with Bealach na Ba, a climb that looks out to the Isle of Skye. The only problem is the hard work it takes to get there! The hairpin climb is over 10km, with a height of 626m, making it a pretty steep slope to success!

2. The Tour of Wessex, Somerset

Since its beginning in 2006, The Tour of Wessex has been the largest multi-stage sportive in the UK! Expect to cover 324 miles over three days, although there are shorter routes for the faint-hearted! The scenery is typically English, meandering around the lanes of the South West, taking in historical monuments and a variety of terrain. And if you weren’t convinced already, they also have some of the best feeding stations of any sportive!

3. Struggle Moors, Yorkshire

Billed as the hardest sportive in Yorkshire, it’s probably also safe to say it’s one of the hardest cycling challenges in the UK! Starting within the beautiful settings of Ampleforth Abbey, Struggle Moors takes daring cyclists through 112 miles of the demanding Yorkshire Moors landscape. With six tricky inclines totalling a climb of more than 3000m, you’ll be tackling more hills than some Tour de France mountain stages! Sacré bleu!

4. The Fred Whitton Challenge, Lake District

At 114 miles The Fred Whitton Challenge, is one of the most popular sportives in the UK and certainly one of the most difficult. The biggest obstacle in your path might just come at the 98 mile mark, with a 30% gradient climb up one Lakeland pass! Nevertheless, this tour of the Lake District will surely make up for the burn with its spectacular scenery.

5. Dunwich Dynamo, London

If you’re looking for a long ride, but without the steep gradients, the Dunwich Dynamo could be for you! Starting from Hackney around 8pm, the 125 mile route occurs during the hours of darkness, ending in the coastal village of Dunwich in Suffolk the following morning. It’s becoming really popular with riders, almost 3,000 cyclists took part in 2017! Be warned though – there’s no mechanical support available, so make sure you’re fully equipped!

With so many fantastic events going on, there’s really no excuse not to get into the saddle and embrace pedal power! However, cycling can easily become a costly undertaking with all the gear that’s around, so it might be worth insuring your equipment. The Insurance Emporium offer up to 25% discount* on Cycle Insurance, and with Optional Benefits such as Competitive Use and Personal Accident you could cycle with real peace of mind. Ride on down to The Insurance Emporium to find out more!
