What you need to know about your insurance policy

While we continue to provide the same level of cover as always, we understand you may have some questions as to how your insurance policy is affected by Brexit.

For the foreseeable future, our Pet, Equine, Caravan, Camera, Cycle, Music, Fishing, Golf and Student insurance products are not affected by Brexit. Existing policyholders will still receive exactly the same level of cover as before, and there are currently no plans to change our products for new customers.

If we do have to make the difficult decision to change any policies, rest assured existing policyholders will be notified. This blog and our website product pages will also be kept up to date with the most relevant information.

Although your level of insurance cover has not been affected by Brexit, there are some things that will be important to consider if you are planning on travelling to an EU country.

Pet Insurance

If you plan on travelling to an EU country with your pet, you may need to comply with certain guidelines. As some rules have changed, you will find if you hold a pet passport issued in Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland) it is no longer valid for travel to an EU country, instead you will be required to obtain an animal health certificate.

Other requirements to prepare your pet for travel include, microchipping your dog or cat and having all relevant vaccinations up to date. A tapeworm treatment may also be required for your dog if travelling to certain EU countries.

We recommend reading the latest regulations ahead of travel by keeping an eye on the official government pet travel page, and you make sure to check the rules of the country you’re travelling to for any additional requirements. We also strongly advise contacting your vet at least four months in advance of travelling with them.

Equine Insurance

If you plan on travelling to an EU country with your horse or other equines, you may need to comply with certain guidelines, including applying for an export health certificate (EHC), checking you have the right equine identification and seeing whether you will need an export welfare declaration. Ahead of travel, it is required to comply to isolation and residency requirements, additionally you’ll need to factor having some blood tests taken and have your equine tested for certain diseases.

We recommend reading the latest regulations ahead of travel by keeping an eye on the official government equine travel page, and you make sure to check the rules of the country you’re travelling to for any additional requirements. We also strongly advise contacting your vet at least four months in advance of travelling with them.

Caravan Insurance

If you plan on travelling to an EU country in your caravan, you may need to comply with certain guidelines. If you are driving your own vehicle you will need to bring your logbook (V5C) and your insurance certificate. You may need an international driving permit (IDP) to drive in some countries. If you’re planning on driving abroad, we’d recommend checking the official government driving in the EU page and check the countries overseas driving rules.

You may need a green card for both your car and caravan if driving in certain countries, you should be able to acquire one by contacting your car insurance provider. This proves that your insurance covers at least the minimum cover in the country you’re driving in.

You could be required to register your trailer before towing it aboard, this depends on the countries you are travelling through and the gross weight of your caravan. All trailers over 3,500kg require a registration.
